FAQs

Can my baby really sleep in the box?

Yes! Many generations of babies have slept in boxes in Finland. The baby box:

  • is a similar length to a standard Moses basket, so will last a comparable period of time, but it is wider enabling supervised tummy time
  • is light weight and portable meaning your baby can always nap in the same room as you throughout the day
  • is made with non-toxic glues and inks using predominantly recycled cardboard
  • features special “cot-safe” foam mattress suitable for newborns, free of CFCs, colourings, heavy metals and prohibited chemicals that meets British Standards and Fire Regulations

what size is the box?

The Ekatot baby box is 70cm (length) x 42cm (width)  x 27cm (height), replicating the original äitiyspakkaus. It's even big enough for twins!

SHOULD I TAKE ANY SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WITH THE BOX?

A few precautions to consider:

  • always place the box on a flat, sturdy surface
  • never lift or move the box with the baby inside
  • don’t put the lid on when the baby is inside
  • when it is nap time, lay the baby on its back with its feet at the end of the box
  • keep the box away from radiators, drafts, open flames and excess heat
  • don’t let the box get wet

To reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) the Lullaby Trust also recommends:

  • your baby sleeps in the same room as you for the first 6 months of life
  • removing any soft toys from the cot before each sleep period
  • avoiding use of soft or bulky bedding such as quilts, pillows and duvet

What standards do your products meet?

All clothes within the box are certified according to the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 product class I (items for babies and toddlers). This is an independent testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products, at all stages of production. Certification requires that all components of an item (e.g. sewing threads, linings, prints, buttons, zips, rivets etc) must comply with the criteria.

Why have you chosen the specific box contents?

The contents of the official äitiyspakkaus have been carefully selected by the Finnish Government to provide necessary essentials and promote public health messages. The contents are modified every year according to social needs and trends. We aim to replicate the Finnish maternity package as closely as possible while ensuring the contents of the Ekatot baby box are relevant to the UK climate.

The clothes range from newborn-12 months (50-74cm in size), so you can enjoy them throughout the first year of your child’s life. Many of the other items can be enjoyed for even longer.

CAN I HAVE THE BOX CUSTOMISED FOR MY SON/DAUGHTER?

Unfortunately this is not something we currently offer. The contents of the box are deliberately gender neutral so that they are suitable for both boys and girls.
